Job Description

HelpAge International is seeking an experienced professional to support the development of strategic partnerships, fundraising opportunities, sponsorships and resource mobilisation for the Africa Ageing Conference and wider priorities under HelpAge’s Africa Plan.

The successful candidate will lead the day-to-day development of funding opportunities, donor cultivation and partnership engagement for the Africa Ageing Conference.

The role will focus on developing a strong funding pipeline, preparing compelling investment propositions, engaging donors and sponsors, and building external partnerships that support the successful delivery and long-term impact of the Conference.

The post holder will also contribute to broader resource mobilisation and partnership priorities emerging from HelpAge International’s Africa Plan and Africa Coordination Mechanism.

Key Responsibilities

Resource Mobilisation and Funding Development

  • Lead the development and implementation of the Africa Ageing Conference resource mobilisation and partnership plan.

  • Ensure fundraising activities align with HelpAge International’s organisational priorities and agreed targets.

  • Develop and maintain a prioritised pipeline of funding, sponsorship and in-kind support opportunities.

  • Track opportunities, ownership, status, next steps and strategic fit.

  • Develop compelling investment propositions, concept notes, funding proposals, sponsorship packages and pitch materials.

  • Work closely with the Conference team, Regional Adviser for Africa, Fundraising & Strategic Partnerships Team and relevant technical, finance and communications colleagues.

  • Progress opportunities from research and donor cultivation through proposal development and stewardship.

  • Ensure agreements follow the organisation’s required approval processes.

Strategic Partnerships and External Engagement

  • Identify and cultivate relationships with prospective funders, sponsors, network members and strategic partners.

  • Maintain strong relationships with external stakeholders relevant to the Africa Ageing Conference and wider Africa priorities.

  • Represent HelpAge International in approved external engagements.

  • Present funding propositions and explore potential areas of partner interest.

  • Escalate proposed partnership terms and commitments for internal review and approval.

  • Identify partnership opportunities aligned with the Africa Ageing Conference, Africa Plan and organisational priorities.

  • Advise colleagues on the strategic fit, potential risks and appropriate engagement approaches for partnership opportunities.

Africa Ageing Conference

  • Lead the day-to-day resource mobilisation and partnership workstream for the Africa Ageing Conference.

  • Ensure fundraising activities respond to agreed Conference plans, programme priorities and resource requirements.

  • Work closely with the Africa Conference and Regional Platform Coordinator.

  • Collaborate with the Conference Planning and Coordination Team to progress funding and partnership opportunities.

  • Support stewardship of Conference funders, sponsors and partners before, during and after the event.

  • Identify longer-term partnership and funding opportunities arising from Conference outcomes and its wider legacy.

Coordination and Internal Collaboration

  • Work closely with the Regional Adviser for Africa, Head of Network Development and Fundraising & Strategic Partnerships Team.

  • Ensure activities align with organisational priorities, donor ownership arrangements and fundraising processes.

  • Coordinate technical, financial, communications, due diligence, risk and approval inputs.

  • Maintain accurate records of funding and partnership activities.

  • Provide regular reports on funding pipelines, progress, risks, decisions and next steps.

Wider Africa Resource Mobilisation

  • Contribute to resource mobilisation and strategic partnership development for priorities under the Africa Plan and Africa Coordination Mechanism.

  • Use relationships and information generated through the Conference to identify wider funding opportunities.

  • Explore collaborative opportunities involving HelpAge network members and regional partners.

  • Identify and assess emerging funding and partnership opportunities.

  • Provide recommendations on strategic fit and potential progression.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should possess:

  • Degree in International Development, Fundraising, Business Development, Public Policy, International Relations, Social Sciences or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

  • Substantial experience in fundraising, strategic partnerships, business development, sponsorship or donor engagement within an international or regional environment.

  • Proven experience developing and managing funding or sponsorship pipelines.

  • Experience progressing prospective donors or partners from research and cultivation through proposal development and stewardship.

  • Experience developing support for major conferences, events, platforms, campaigns or multi-stakeholder initiatives.

  • Strong prospect research and analytical skills.

  • Ability to assess strategic fit, eligibility, risks and appropriate engagement approaches.

  • Experience preparing investment propositions, concept notes, proposals, sponsorship packages, pitch materials and partner communications.

  • Confidence engaging directly with prospective funders, sponsors and senior external stakeholders.

  • Experience leading face-to-face and virtual meetings and presenting funding propositions.

  • Experience working with civil society networks, membership organisations, regional platforms or multi-partner coalitions.

  • Excellent written communication, coordination and information-management skills.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Ability to manage multiple relationships, opportunities and deadlines across countries, cultures and time zones.

  • Fluency in English.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

The following will be considered an advantage:

  • Knowledge of African Union, Regional Economic Community or United Nations coordination structures.

  • Experience securing funding from institutional donors, foundations, trusts, corporate partners or philanthropies in Africa.

  • Knowledge of ageing, demographic change, health and care, social protection, human rights, gender, climate resilience, humanitarian action or inclusive development.

  • Experience in conference sponsorship, senior-level partner roundtables, corporate engagement or collaborative funding models.

  • Ability to communicate in French, Portuguese or Arabic.
