Job Description
The Barrick Africa Middle East Team is seeking a qualified and experienced HME Mechanic to join its operations team.
The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out mechanical repairs, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, inspections, component replacement, and other maintenance activities on heavy mobile equipment.
The role requires strong knowledge of diesel mechanics, hydraulic systems, heavy mobile equipment, diagnostic tools, and safe workshop practices. The HME Mechanic will work closely with the Heavy Mobile Equipment Supervisor to maximise equipment reliability, availability, and safe operation.

Key Responsibilities
The HME Mechanic will be responsible for:
-
Following safe working practices, including attending compulsory safety training and meetings.
-
Using all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
-
Reporting incidents, accidents, hazards, and unsafe working conditions.
-
Complying with all Safety, Occupational Health, Environmental, and other relevant company policies and procedures.
-
Following approved maintenance procedures and completing mechanical activities to the required standard without causing damage to components, systems, or equipment.
-
Ensuring proper equipment isolation before commencing maintenance work.
-
Following working-at-height and confined-space procedures.
-
Conducting pre-start equipment inspections and checks.
-
Performing mechanical repairs and preventive maintenance on heavy mobile equipment.

Maintaining heavy mobile equipment in a safe and efficient operating condition to support production and cost targets.

Carrying out troubleshooting, fault finding, and corrective maintenance following unplanned equipment breakdowns.

Ensuring maintenance practices contribute to maximum equipment availability.

Using work instructions, job sheets, specifications, and other documentation to determine job requirements and required resources.

Conducting preventive maintenance inspections according to established maintenance schedules.

Ensuring compliance with preventive maintenance requirements.

Carrying out upgrades and modifications on mobile and plant equipment when required.

Removing and replacing engines, transmissions, torque converters, final drives, differentials, hydraulic pumps, and other components.

Providing accurate and timely feedback to the Heavy Mobile Equipment Supervisor regarding equipment conditions that could affect performance or availability.

Keeping the Heavy Mobile Equipment Supervisor and relevant stakeholders informed about equipment availability.

Identifying mechanical equipment and resources required for maintenance activities.
-
Selecting, inspecting, and safely using tools and equipment.
-
Following up on outstanding maintenance and repair activities.
-
Participating in training programmes to develop new technical skills and improve professional capability.

Providing appropriate on-the-job training under the direction of the Heavy Mobile Equipment Supervisor.

Stripping and assembling surface heavy mobile equipment.
-
Maintaining a clean, organised, and safe Heavy Mobile Equipment workshop.
-
Performing preventive maintenance service inspections according to maintenance requirements.
-
Ensuring compliance with work orders, job specifications, resource identification, and inspection requirements.
Qualification Requirements
Applicants should possess:

Secondary Education, which is mandatory.
-
Diesel Mechanics Trade Certification, Full Technician Certificate, VETA Grade One, or equivalent qualification.

Technical or Vocational School training, apprenticeship training, or recognised on-the-job technical training.
-
FTC, VETA, IMTT Trade Test, or an equivalent recognised technical qualification.
-
Valid Tanzanian Driving Licence Class D.

Class F Driving Licence will be an added advantage.
Experience and Competencies
The ideal candidate should have:

At least 2–3 years of experience in a maintenance role involving basic hydraulic and diesel mechanics.

Previous experience in the mining industry, which is essential.
-
Familiarity with heavy mobile equipment and workshop operations.
-
Knowledge of troubleshooting heavy mobile equipment hydraulic and mechanical systems using schematic diagrams or CAT SIS.

Experience in mobile equipment fault finding.
-
Experience using SIS and CAT ET diagnostic software.
-
Ability to provide technical support services with minimal or no supervision.

Strong time-management and planning skills.
-
Ability to complete tasks safely while preventing damage to equipment.

Strong analytical and logical problem-solving skills.

Excellent attention to detail.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.

Ability to operate different tools and equipment safely and effectively.

Ability to conduct safety inspections and identify workplace hazards.
