Job Description

Diageo is seeking an experienced Transport Planning & Safety Lead to support safe, efficient, compliant, and cost-effective transport operations in Mwanza, Tanzania.

The successful candidate will be responsible for transport planning and execution across inbound, outbound, and site logistics while driving Diageo’s transport safety agenda.

The role will focus on improving transport efficiency, fleet utilisation, journey management, third-party logistics performance, regulatory compliance, service delivery, and the achievement of zero-harm objectives.

Purpose of the Role

The Transport Planning & Safety Lead will drive safe, efficient, and compliant transport operations across inbound, outbound, and site logistics.

The role is responsible for ensuring compliance with transport safety requirements, improving transport planning processes, coordinating internal and external stakeholders, and strengthening service delivery.

The position will contribute to:

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Executing inbound and outbound transport plans to achieve required turnaround times, service levels, and cost-efficiency targets.

  • Coordinating with Warehousing, Planning, Sourcing, and Sales teams to ensure smooth movement and delivery of materials and customer orders.

  • Monitoring transporter performance.

  • Optimising transport routes.

  • Improving fleet utilisation.

  • Monitoring transport-related Key Performance Indicators covering efficiency, cost, service, and safety compliance.

  • Identifying and implementing continuous improvement initiatives across transport operations and safety.

  • Supporting initiatives aimed at reducing logistics costs while improving service levels.

  • Leading transport safety engagements.

  • Coordinating driver safety training.

  • Ensuring third-party logistics providers comply with applicable Standard Operating Procedures.

  • Developing site-specific traffic management plans in collaboration with Logistics Managers and Site Health & Safety Managers.

  • Conducting regular risk assessments to identify hazards associated with transport operations.

  • Coaching drivers on safety performance, violations, and corrective actions.

  • Managing Journey Planning Management processes.

  • Conducting and supporting pre-trip safety briefings.

  • Coordinating post-trip reviews.

  • Identifying journey deviations and ensuring appropriate corrective or preventive action.

  • Ensuring vehicle inspections and checklists are completed correctly.

  • Ensuring forklift inspections and checklists are completed.

  • Monitoring inspection findings and ensuring identified gaps are closed.

  • Investigating transport-related incidents.

  • Preparing incident reports and ensuring preventive actions are implemented.

  • Driving compliance with CARM, IAA, SFIPP, company standards, and applicable local regulations.

  • Conducting internal audits of transport safety and operational processes.

  • Developing corrective action plans and ensuring audit findings are appropriately addressed.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Transport Management, or a related field.

Professional certifications in transport safety or logistics will be considered an advantage, including:

Experience Requirements

The ideal candidate should have:

  • At least five (5) years of relevant experience in transport operations, transport planning, safety, or an equivalent area.

  • Experience within FMCG or third-party logistics environments will be preferred.

  • Strong understanding of transport safety standards.

  • Experience with journey management.

  • Knowledge of incident investigation methodologies.

Technical Skills

Candidates should demonstrate proficiency or practical knowledge in:

  • Transport Management Systems (TMS).

  • Warehouse Management Systems (WMS).

  • Route optimisation.

  • Microsoft Office applications.

  • Fleet and transport performance monitoring.

  • Transport safety management.

  • Risk assessment.

  • Journey planning and management.

  • Third-party logistics operations.
