Job Purpose
NMB Bank Plc is seeking a highly experienced Senior Manager – Credit Assessment to lead the Wholesale Credit Assessment team.
The role is responsible for the effective management, assessment, administration, monitoring, inspection, and reporting of the Bank’s wholesale credit risk.
The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining a sustainably profitable credit portfolio by ensuring sound credit decisions, strong risk management practices, high-quality credit assessment, and effective monitoring of the Bank’s wholesale borrowers.
Main Responsibilities
The Senior Manager – Credit Assessment will be responsible for:

Managing Wholesale Credit personnel responsible for assessing business and financial risks in credit applications and making recommendations for approval or rejection.

Leading and actively managing the team responsible for credit assessment and approvals for Wholesale Borrowers as defined by the Bank.

Maintaining high standards of credit quality through proper assessment, sampling, review, and application of credit best practices.

Advising the Head of Wholesale Credit on any potential or actual changes in borrower or sector risk profiles and recommending appropriate mitigation or remedial actions.

Managing credit analysis requirements relating to counterparty and issuer risks across Individuals, Sovereigns, Financial Institutions, Corporates, and Non-Bank Financial Institutions.

Participating, where required, in Credit Committees, Watchlist Forums and Committees, IFRS 9 discussions, and Board Credit Committee meetings.

Working closely with front-office teams to identify and mitigate credit risks at an early stage and ensure transactions are appropriately structured to protect the Bank from credit losses.

Identifying portfolio risk concentrations, emerging opportunities, and potential unexpected risks.

Working closely with the Head of Wholesale Credit, Head of Wholesale Client Origination, and Wholesale Business Unit Heads to improve operational processes and recommend beneficial changes.

Collaborating with other managers to identify areas requiring improvement in products, processes, and services and recommending solutions to minimise risk.

Managing the flow of relevant information both upward and downward within the function.

Building, developing, and leading high-performing teams through effective guidance, training, coaching, and empowerment.

Acting as a role model to direct reports and other team members.

Implementing the Bank’s Performance Management directives.
-
Ensuring staff understand how their individual roles contribute to departmental and Bank strategy.

Managing staff performance, including performance contracting, reviews, and appraisals.
-
Developing models for measuring Value at Risk (VaR), including probability of default, loss given default, and rating migration.

Assisting in the preparation and presentation of credit approval packs and requests to Credit Committees.

Challenging pricing structures to maximise value while ensuring compliance with the Bank’s Pricing Policy and/or Pricing Committee requirements.

Representing and defending the unit’s credit opinions before Credit Committees and ensuring decisions are accurately captured in meeting minutes.

Supporting the Head of Wholesale Credit in credit risk aggregation, management, and proactive portfolio monitoring.

Developing credit risk measurement methodologies.

Ensuring compliance with consumer protection requirements across the relevant business areas and units.

Leading the Bank’s credit audit assignments relating to the wholesale portfolio, including audits by the Bank of Tanzania and external auditors.

Ensuring audit findings and queries are addressed within the required timelines.

Managing credit-risk-related policies and procedures, as well as staffing and development of the credit function.

Developing internal assessment models for quantifying product-related credit risks and ensuring effective communication of key risk register matters.

Working closely with Management Information and Credit Reporting teams on data clean-up relating to Credit Reference Bureaus, Bank of Tanzania requirements, and internal and external audit findings.

Supporting timely closure of credit-related audit and reporting action items.

Proactively managing IFRS 9 impairments and monitoring key portfolio indicators including PAR, NPL, and ECL.

Working closely with the Special Asset Management department to identify, document, and communicate lessons learned in order to improve portfolio quality.

Participating in system developments to ensure credit functionalities are properly understood, implemented, and tested.

Ensuring relevant staff participate in end-to-end testing of credit-related system functionalities to confirm that systems meet the Bank’s operational requirements.

Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should possess:

Bachelor’s degree in Banking, Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, Commerce, Law, Economics, or a related field.

Master’s degree in Business Studies will be an added advantage.

Postgraduate education in Banking and/or relevant banking certification will be an added advantage.
-
At least five (5) years of experience in Credit Management, preferably within wholesale banking or large corporate credit.

Leadership experience within medium to large organisations.
